Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is located on the southern end of Assateague Island. The refuge includes beach, marsh and forest habitats. There are large numbers of birds here, but the main attraction is probably the wild ponies.
Luray Caverns were discovered by humans in 1878, but formed many eons ago when the Appalachian Mountains were formed. A vast inland sea had existed here, and as the mountains lifted, the water drained away, and the caverns formed. Minerals were trapped inside and created the stalactites and stalagmites visible today. All the colors in the caverns are a result of the colors in the minerals. New deposits are still forming at the rate of 1 cubic inch every 120 years.
The Bull Run Mountain Conservancy is an area close to home for me where you can easily forget that cities exist nearby. Hiking on the forested trails is a peaceful, serene experience enhanced by birdsong and the beauty of nature. There is a well run organization caring for the 800 acres under its stewardship and providing opportunities for research and education.
